09/06/2003 On the way to Tampere...
Day 6 - Entry 2
I am always trying to find ways to explain touring as an independent band. I've used the catholic moving company analogy before but now I can sum it up with two scenarios.
1) The show is at a certain time. You are given a precise hour of when you need to be there. You are exactly on time. The venue won't open for 2 hours. The soundguy gets there two hours later. You don't get paid.
2) The show is somewhere around 10PM. It doesn't seem like a big deal. You get lost and show up at 9PM. Cool, you are still early, right? No. The show started a 8PM. You had a soundcheck at 6PM and a TV interview at 7PM. Now the TV journalist is pissed and combative in the interview. You don't get paid.
Heh... as I wrote this I sorta made it a little less general than I was hoping. Our show last night was a spin on 2). It wasn't bad though. The TV journalist, Semira, forgave us quickly and the interview was fun. They also filmed us playing. It's supposed to be on TV all over Finland (Sub TV?). Whee! The name of the venue was "Makasiitit". We were told it was an older red brick building. We got lost on the way and found a red brick building called "Makasiiti". Believe me when I tell you that, although this seemed like an honest mistake, it still didn't make for a good excuse with the average Finn.
The show was a huge birthday party. There was an Arabian magic act. It was two finnish guys dressed up as Arabs with fake mustaches and eyebrows. All in all, tons of people and goodtimes. We retired to the hostel around 1:30AM and got a good nights sleep.
Now, we are in the belly of the "blue whale" (our 2nd van) on route to Telakka (the bar) in Tampere. Janne, Killi and Pekka (from Chainsmoker) are in the bus with us. They are real nice. Kinda softspoken. On stage they blow up.
Well.... I better get off of this thing so they don't think I'm a stuck-up jerk. |
