Volumen - Science Faction (Wntage USA Records, 2006)
In the outback of Montana's mountains with it's vast geography and low population density two childhood friends - both growing up a bike ride away from hundreds of underground nuclear warheads - formed their band Volumen. Their base is experimental rock with traces of new-wave, art rock and some kind of indie, all made with a lot of creativity. The ideas are interesting and the music is intelligent. Both lyrics and compositions manage to challenge the listener on several levels. Glockenspiels blends with noisy, reverse guitar feedback and steady machine-like drums, space echo vocals, samples of war-related newsreels and computer-generated effect etc. This is music with a lot of integrity and a very personal touch, the guys have a story to tell and even though the experiments do not always succeed Volumen has my full respect.
