Doug Smith
If Shane is the high school Physics Club treasurer of VOLUMEN, Doug is the affable, popular guy who toes the fine line between band dork and senior class president. Cheerleaders leak the info that they want him to ask them out, but he’s always genuinely nice to the less popular girls and boys, too. In addition to writing most of what doesn’t get written by his longtime friend and musical partner, Shane (in the platonic sense, that is—at least we THINK so), Doug’s signature wikkid lyxx and fine tenor are the yin to Shane’s yang, the butter to Shane’s muffin, the hot dog in Shane’s....well, anyway, the other half of the songwriting equation. Additionally, Doug is a beacon of calm and tranquility in his other bandmates’ roiling sea of adolescent squirreliness, and a fine cook to boot. The last male bonding I did with Doug was undertaken when we spent two days in the Montana wilderness picking morel mushrooms. Oh, the magic he worked with those little morsels...

Es samērā reti mēdzu iet uz dižu ārzemju grupu koncertiem, un pēc tam vienmēr vairāk vai mazāk to nožēloju, tomēr Volumen gadījumā man ir sajūta, ka esmu izdarījis kaut ko nepiedodamu! Diemžēl šo ierakstu dzirdēju tikai PĒC viņu koncerttūres pa Latviju, kad bija jau par vēlu un nācās vien šaustīt sevi par izdarīto gadsimta kļūdu un mēģināt šo nebūšanu aizmirst, klausoties Cries From Space...
Šis ievads patiesībā varētu būt arī viss apraksts, jo tas parāda to, cik sasodīti (!!!!) labs, manuprāt, ir šis ieraksts. Reti kad gadās tādi albūmi, kurus es varu klausīties vēl un vēl, un vēl, un vēl, bet šis nu beidzot ir tāds: ideāls ieraksts no pirmās līdz pēdējai dziesmai! Te ir viss, kas nepieciešams manai dvēselei: skaistas melodijas (bet ne pliekani saldas vai popsīgi lipīgas), enerģiska, pat pozitīva gaisotne, pietiekama deva veco laiku vēsmu (vecās sintezātoru skaņas ir megalabas, it sevišķi tās no sērijas "Scooby-Do superīgā multene"), interesantas dziesmu uzbūves, oriģinalitāte un savdabība, un tā tālāk, un tā tālāk, un, starp citu, pēdējā dziesma pat nedaudz atgādina par vēl vienu man mīļu grupu - Primus. Vells un elle - es atkal sāku domāt par to, kādēļ neaizgāju uz koncertu!
Diemžēl man joprojām nav skaidrs, kā šo disku īsti dabūt...
